Death on Wheels.

Ok, so I’m not exactly that sketchy of a tractor driver, but I did make two pretty stupid errors on my second day training with Mike.

I was nervous signing up for this job, and now am even more nervous…

First, I got cocky thinking I could go around an electric pole (despite Mike’s protests) I assured him “I got this!”…and very nearly killed us both.  I’m exaggerating a bit, but my lack of experience showed I had no idea how far the seeder lagged behind the tractor.

Just because the tractor had cleared the pole didn’t mean I was in the clear.  We were able to raise the arms and put them back down after we’d passed the dangerous object.  Phew.

My second mistake was turning too sharply.  Which is incredibly easy to do.  Especially when you think you’re bound to hit something.  I knocked a wheel and bent a small bracket (which is now being replaced).

I’m nervous, but having made these two simple mistakes early on has given me an understanding of what I’m dealing with.  A massive death trap.

I’m not that excited about tractor photos, but (if you want!) I’ll put some up later.

This morning we spotted a few Major Mitchell Cockatoo, which are quite simply…stunning!  No photo, but I’ll keep an eye out incase we see them again.

And right now Mike’s playing his first game of the seasons for the Coorow Magpies…which is why I am able to write this post! haha…again sitting in the parking lot looking sketchy.

  1. Oh yes, be careful – I grew up in western NSW on a farm and there were some terrible tractor accidents. Our P.E. teacher pulled down a pole when ploughing and was really badly burnt by the lines – lucky she wasn’t killed and be careful going up slopes – they seem to love to roll.

      • Lol, I know! I was going to add – but don’t let me put you off or anything. Because I think it’s an excellent skill to have, my sibs and I were all driving tractors and harvesters when we were teenagers. In fact I have this one photo of my brother driving a tractor when he looks as if he’s about six and my father is sitting on the back smoking a cigarette and throwing off bales of hay. It’s just because I’m a mother now, I want everyone to be safe – a scare is good for you, makes you more aware, you’ll be awesome now. 🙂

  2. hahah hey I think you’re right. Caution is better than being too casual. Because yes…it’s not as cruisy as you might think. I love that you were right into tractor driving when you were a teenager! Are you still in NSW? (I love the coastline there…and particular Narooma). It’s an amazing place.

  3. LOVE THESE PHOTOS! I think they are some of the best I’ve seen on your blog so far – and all of your photos are beautiful. Myke and I are searching for our first tractor. We closed on 18 acres in Kentucky a week ago and the grass is growing fast! It’s pretty hilly in some areas so we need a 4×4 to prevent rolling, only that jacks the price WAY up there. Anyway, be careful. I’d love to see some tractor pics.
