The She Wolf and Friends.

We’ve come across some pretty incredible creatures here over the past week.  The most interesting being the female huntsman that I nearly stepped on last night.  She was carrying her entire brood of spider babies on her abdomen.  At first I was weary of putting her in a glass (for the sole fear of millions of babies escaping in the house) however, she and her babies were very patient with me while I snapped many (100+) photographs.  I also took a video which shows the little ones running around her body over others who were nestled in.  If I upgrade this blog to “pro” I’ll upload the video…until then you’ll have to imagine the playfulness of it.

Nature is pretty cool isn’t it?

This centipede was found in our house.  Mike spotted it and I froze…I’m not sure if these are poisonous so I wasn’t game to touch it.Screen Shot 2013-04-26 at 1.23.20 PM

To light her, I placed a LED flashlight onto the rim of the glass and shot her with my little canon powershot.  I could have observed her for hours, but a part of me felt a little guilty keeping her from food.  Surely she’d be putting in a massive effort to feed the little ones! ps:  I’ve been listening to these tracks as I’m sitting here watch the sunset on the horizon… It makes it feel even more epic.  The album is old news now, but I’ve got a soft spot for these tracks.  If you haven’t had a listen please hit up Youtube for samples!

  1. So interesting to see all the things you see. Spring is here now and we are in full bloom everywhere – photo’d a gila monster (a lizard about 20 inches long) bopping along by the garage. Yesterday we had to block up a colony of Africanized bees on our roof (they can be really dangerous). I am so glad you take such a delight in photographing these things to share with us.

      • I will try to find a way to use the image; maybe there will be no reason at all. It is always a privilege to see the gila monster as they are not that common. Glad you liked the bobcat; we have quite a few here.

    • hahah hey Jen. I kept twitching after I set her free… Imagening the little babies running all over me! ahhaha….
Huntsmen are actually quite harmless…they are good to have around your home. They eat all the other spiders. I’ve never seen a spider carrying a fly on the ground before so I agree it was curious to look at!
