Western Australian Spiders

Here is an assortment of spiders that I’ve managed to photograph of the past couple of years from Perth, to Coorow and Warradarge.  They come in all shapes and colours…  Stay tuned I’ve got some exciting news about spiders to share with you in my next post.

Robert Whyte, author of the field guide “Spiders of Australia” has kindly helped me identify these beautiful spiders.  From top to bottom:

  • Lycosidae A Wolf Spider
  • Sandalodes scopifer
  • Thomisidae Tmarus sp.
  • Araneidae Araneinae Araneus arenaceus relative
  • Thomisidae Zygometis xanthogaster
  • Thomisidae Stephanopis ornata or close relative
  • Salticidae Apricia jovialis female

The comprehensive field guide he wrote has been incredibly useful, and comes with very clear images of each spider and categorises them in a straightforward and practical manner.  I imagine even people with spider phobias would enjoy the maratus jumping spider section!  If you’re looking for a copy take a peek at it here.

This weekend I traveled North to Eneabba to spend the long weekend with Brian and Tessa on the farm.  We headed to the coast our first few days to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere to beach always brings  During this time, we socialised for a few nights, enjoyed the local art scene and also got to witness the rare blood moon.  Tessie (our dog) warmly greeted us when we returned to the farm and I spent several hours taking her and the 3 other’s into the bush.  It was so nice to enjoy the quiet and company this weekend.

Mike will be headed to Coorow this Thursday to begin a seeding season, which will have him back on farm soil for about three months.  I’m happy that he’ll get a chance to get back onto the land, but also deeply sad that he’ll be away for 3 months (I’m trying not to think about it too much!).  I’m going to either pass my driving test in a few weeks time (fingers and toes crossed) or take a bus to visit him, depending on how I go.

Anyway, this Easter long weekend was really just great.  It would have been made even better if Mike were with us too.

Hoping you all enjoying your breaks too.  What did you get up to?  Did you eat buckets of chocolate?

Found these in the leaves today…

Higher Grounds & Lower Spectrum

Higher Grounds are three guys and one coffee cart who’ve moved into the building at work.  If you live in East Perth, and want a good “cuppa” before heading to the office you should check them out.

Lower Spectrum’s deep, echoing (literally) dark sound was playing on a record, in a shop a few weeks ago.

It stopped me dead in my tracks…

Dead. in. my. tracks.

Lower Spectrum – Nocturnal

Lower Spectrum – Cathedral

Lower Spectrum – Levity

All I know is the guy is from Perth.  You can buy the EP on vinyl or iTunes.

Here are a few songs I’ve been listening to:

Royksopp – Sordid Affair (Maceo Plex Remix)

Prints_ – Ghosts

Hollow Coves – The Woods

Atlas Bound – Talk (Jerry Folk Remix)

Let me know if you do listen, what you think…

I’ve been crouching most of the morning in Queens Garden amongst the plants trying to capture the curious little jumping spiders that surrounded me.  At first I thought there was only one, but when I looked closer… they were in serious abundance.  Young, old, dark, light, skittish and oddly one that was literally a camera hog. I think, I’ve got 4 different spiders here.  The most fabulous I spent some time filming.  The video is much better today, as I tried using a tripod to keep the camera steady.  He’s just sussing me out.

This weekend I’ve been updating my website.  www.redterrain.com  check it out!

I’ve also been listening to a few songs repeatedly.  Alt – J released a new album this year and a couple of the tracks are stand outs: (not to mention Hunger of The Pine which I wrote about a few months back).  It’s really great stuff.

Every Other Freckle – Alt J

Warm Foothills – Alt J

Gospel of John Hurt – Alt J
